Your home is one of the biggest investments in your life. Protecting that investment requires a certain amount of all around maintenance and upkeep. While repairing worn window hinges and leaking roofs are necessary, most homeowners do not realize that one of the most significant influences of a home's value often goes uncared for - the basement.

A homeowner often does not consider the potential problems that commonly undermine a basement until something happens - most often, leaking water from a cracked wall, or worse, flooding. In reality, the potential for there to be problems in any basement (finished or un-finished) are significant. These problems may not only influence the value of the home, but may also have a greater impact on the family's health. Radon gas and moisture infiltration resulting in mold growth affects not only the air quality of the basement, but the entire home (50% of the air in the house originated in the basement).

Thankfully, there are solutions homeowners can pursue to tend to such problems, while considering a few extra precautionary measures. Whether or not a basement is finished, ensuring that it is waterproofed will have an overall positive influence on the entire home.

Foundation wall cracks are a common occurrence. Most concrete wall cracks are in fact, leaking water problems, and generally can be a D-I-Y project. The other type of wall cracking results from structural deficiencies caused by foundation movement. This is especially common in harsh climates where the ground repeatedly goes through freezing and thawing cycles, adding further foundation stress. Low-pressure injection of epoxy is the most common and practical method of repairing structural wall cracks. In addition, these repairs can be optimized generally by the installation of a reinforcement product, such as carbon fiber countersunk staples or straps. Due to the complications and time involved in such installations, the repairing of structural concrete cracks is generally reserved for professional contractors.

This article focuses on the repair of leaking wall cracks and the D-I-Y repair process. With most cracks, it's not a matter of if they will eventually leak water, but a matter of when. A common failed D-I-Y attempt for repairing leaking wall cracks is patching them with hydraulic cement. When the crack starts to leak again a few months later, the homeowner often tries to reapply more cement or apply a waterproof paint. Neither of those are reliable permanent solutions. As the concrete continues to shrink, the voids within the wall continue to form and water leaks out.

To curb water seepage, a flexible product that will move within the wall is needed. A polyurethane foam is the preferred method for repairing leaking poured foundation wall cracks by low-pressure injection. Urethane foam is a flexible material that easily injects into the crack, via surface ports, either with a standard caulk gun or a dual cartridge manual dispensing tool. After pasting the surface ports to the wall (six to 10 inches apart) using an epoxy port adhesive, the same material is applied over the entire crack as a surface sealer.

After the surface sealer has cured (once finger nailed hard - curing depends on the specific type of surface seal epoxy being used), it is recommended that the crack be flushed with water using a plastic bottle or by filling the hose assembly several times. Not only does this process help remove debris and dust within the crack, it also insures that the urethane will be more effective after injected. Urethane foam reacts with water by expanding, filling the entire void. This can be done by injecting water into the top port, and each subsequent port thereafter. Once the inside of the crack is wet, the wall is ready to be injected with urethane.

When injecting the urethane into the wall, begin with the bottom port, and work your way up. The urethane flows to the back of the wall, moving upwards after contacting soil, towards the path of least resistance. If the urethane is flowing properly, it will drip from the next port above within a few minutes. Once that happens, start injecting into that port, and continue the process until all ports have been injected.

The final step is the removal of the surface seal, if the homeowner deems it necessary. Leaving the surface seal on the wall will not pose any harm, though the homeowner may wish to have it removed if concerned about appearance. Standard surface seals can be removed by chipping and grinding. An easier alternative is a seal and peel surface seal, which peel off easily after the injection process, leaving an almost invisible repair.

Hot and humid environment composite processing for attention

When the environment is evident in the film when a hot and humid conditions of dry machining, a considerable number of complex color printing factory did not pay attention to this potential change, natural compound in the process of color printing quality problems arise more. So hot and humid weather, the complex process should pay attention to it?

A high temperature and humid weather of the dry composite of

Then dry compound is mostly used by two liquid reaction type of polyester, polyurethane adhesive. However, its performance generally and the choice of isocyanate, polyester polyol of molecular structure, degree of polymerization, functional groups and the mixing ratio and other conditions vary. Two liquid reaction is the end part of the hydroxyl polymer composition and molecular structure of the main agent containing isocyanate-based curing agent components from the cross-linking reaction, close together to form a higher degree of polyurethane. With different acid ester curing agent component has a strong activity with hydroxyl groups, amine material reacts with the polymer and the reaction rate than polyester, polyurethane reaction main agent for more than 10 times faster. Such as methanol, ethanol, water and other amine substances. This is also the most polyurethane adhesives manufacturers in the instruction manual for restrictions on water and esters reasons. Then dry lamination process, the humidity is high impact on the complex is in many aspects, such as:

1. Adhesives harden enough to keep after composite curing adhesive, resulting in lower peel strength;

2. Optical Alliance has slowed, reducing the tack of adhesive bonding, easy blistering caused by composite membrane;

3. High temperature cooking film bag, high-temperature cooking process in the phenomenon of broken bags increased;

4. Solvent evaporation is not complete, more complex film bags smell phenomenon;

5. Composites increased when the bubble gum set, composite membrane easy to spot from the white point and crystallization points, etc.;

6. Composite film hard crisp feel fat has increased.

2, hot and humid weather to note

Through this understanding, a hot and humid weather the impact of the dry compound with general understanding, then dry lamination process can be carried out in each process in the targeted control:

1. To control the various films, such as nylon, cellophane films easily absorb moisture, when the nylon wrinkle, then there may absorb moisture, so in case there is no complex complete with a metal foil or barrier of a good film to film wrapped on the shelves of dry conditions, avoid piling on the ground directly.

2. Must ethyl acetate solvent used in the water, the amount of alcohol is controlled as much as possible to buy the regular channels of solvent, and the airtight storage. Detection of moisture content of ethyl acetate, ethyl a way can be half and half mixture of toluene, ethyl ester to detect moisture content, such as the bottom drops and mixed white phenomena, it indicates that the moisture content of ethyl too high, fast water also can be an indicator to detect the water content.

3. The environment must be combined to control the exhaust fan placed in the room to enhance indoor air circulation, but do not get in front Compound Machine Blowing, and check the guide roll, roll on the composite roll, and whether the network drops, again with a dry towel.

4. In the preparation of binders, with the appropriate amount of reduction, with the distribution with the use, do not place too long, and preparation, to ensure the amount of curing agent to make it to the limit by as much as possible, may be appropriate to increase the dose cure (5-10%), the main agent and curing agent to increase the extent of crosslinking.

5. To change the parameters of composite aircraft, currently the most complex machines smaller outlet in the compound, the inlet air speed than the wind speed, causing the formation of high pressure within the drying tunnel, easy to make slower solvent evaporation from so that the composite film increased residual solvents.

Has any air-conditioning contractors done a house with polyurethane foam?

I have a builder that is building a house that has spray foam in the walls and on the roof. I talked to the insulator and he said a rule of thumb is to use 1000 sq ft per ton, I can't use just a rule of thumb in need something solid. Does anybody know where to get info on how to run a load with this stuff? The newest edition of Manual J I have doesn't have anything in there about it. He can't give me any R-values on any of this because he says the values will be to low and it will look like I need to take out more BTUH. How am I supposed to do a job when I can't find any info about it.
