There are many athletes who get into trouble during their time away from the field of play. There is an old cliche that states..."What an athlete does off of the field has nothing to do with their on field performance. They are entitled to their own personal lives."
Because athletes are often looked up to and become role models for many youngsters who would like to play a sport, is there a corrupting influence that transcends sport due to the high visibilty of the athlete, whenever an athlete does something wrong.
Do athletes have a responsibility to the public for the athlete's personal life because the athlete in American sport has such high visibility throughout their playing days....?

I am not talking about any direct corrupting infuence as alleged against Pete Rose or Barry Bonds....I am talking about non-direct deeds/actions related to the athlete and not corrupting the sport they are involved in playing.
Put it this way. If I was a school teacher and taught like, 2nd grade, would it matter if I wanted to dress like a hooker and stand on the corner of my small town in fishnet stockings at night and whistle at passing cars? And offer special favors? "Hey cowboy, wanna go for a ride?"
Think it would affect my job? You bet. Why? Because your image is part of your job. And when you scandalize yourself, you scandalize your school , upset your students' parents, etc. It isn't just about being a bad role model. It is about upsetting people who will pull their kids out of the school, and causing a major disruption at schoolboard meetings, inundating the town with undue gossip and commotion, and causing a serious embarassment to the school.
Ok so jocks aren't teachers. But there are many other jobs where your image can affect the public's perception of you. And tainting your own image can cost your employer customers. Why do you think so much emphasis is placed on appearance and professionalism in job interviews? Because you are portraying your employer to the world.
Your overall image and your reputation probably effects you no matter what you do.
