The pride of the US Navy

The USS Constitution or commonly known as the “Old Iron Sides” is the oldest commissioned ship that is still operational. It was one of the six frigates that were commissioned to be built by the US Navy in 1794, construction was completed in 1797. Designed by Joshua Humphreys the ships were meant to be show pieces of US naval strength and as such were much larger and more heavily armed than other frigates at the time.

Today the “Old Ironsides” is a ship of the state and its 55 crew members take part in various ceremonies and keep the ship open for visitors the whole year round. Built in Boston Massachusetts at Edmund Hartt’s shipyard, the ship used the wood of 2,000 live Southern Oak trees. The USS Constitution’s first mission was to patrol the south eastern coastline of the US, during the undeclared war with France. In 1803 the USS Constitution became the flagship of the US Mediterranean squadron that was meant to protect US trading ships from Barbary pirates. A historically significant peace treaty with the Babar cities of Tripoli and Tunis were also signed on board this vessel.

In the 1920’s experts deemed that the USS Constitution was in extreme dis-repair and needed extensive restoration. A voluntary campaign to collect the necessary 400,000 dollars was initiated and civic organizations, patriotic movements and school children participated. The largest contribution was from school children who collected over 150,000 dollars most of it pennies for the fund. In the year 1934 the ship was permanently berthed in Boston where it still remains as a symbol of America’s proud naval history.

A number of Boston hotels can be found located around the Boston where the ship is berthed. Hotels in Boston are extremely varied from five star to bed and breakfast, however, for travelers looking for hotels near the USS Constitution a wide array of accommodation options can be found.

The first US Navy Ship the USS Alfred, what type of wood was it constructed with?

It was probably built of Oak.

Oak is an ideal wood for the frames of ships: it is tough and durable; the branches naturally grow at a large angle to the trunk and branches are often curved.
These features of the oak give great strength to complex shaped objects.
Oak was used for the frames of Royal Navy ships over hundreds of years and for the Dover bronze age boat over 3550 years ago.

USS Alfred
24-gun ship. Port stern quarter. Alfred (formerly the Black Prince) commissioned in 1775.

The first battleship ever owned by the United States of America, the U. S. S. Alfred was commissioned at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on 23 December 1775.

The ship was purchased from the British Royal Navy where it was named the Black Prince.
(This wooden ship-of-the-line is not to be confused with the ironclad Black Prince built in 1861.)

Lieutenant John Paul Jones commanded the USS Alfred and he received the Alfred into the US Navy on 03 December 1775 by hoisting the Grand Union Flag.
