Flying remote controlled (RC) toys are generally regarded as hobbies which are reserved only for serious and seasoned enthusiasts. RC toy helicopter and propeller driven airplanes are considered as the ultimate in toy hobby. There are several types of engines that jet powered flying RC toys have. Some of these are the ducted fan variety and the more expensive gas turbine jet engines which practically work in the same principle like the real jet engines. These types of flying toys are not designed for beginners, particularly the gas turbine engine kind, and you must first become proficient with regular flying toys before you deal with this new type of aircraft.
Ducted fan engines come in two variations. One is the Electric Ducted Fan style, or the EDF, and the other is the Glow Ducted Fan type, or the GDF. The difference lies in the engines themselves. The EDF engines use the electricity provided by its rechargeable batteries while the GDF type uses gas powered engines to achieve maximum fan RPM. Naturally, GDF types are more powerful than EDF engines because they tend to reach much higher rotation speeds compared to their electric counterparts, thus, giving more power and lift during flight. The only downside about GDF type jet powered RC flying toys is that they are a little bit expensive considering the engines and tuned pipe alone may cost you around three hundred dollars. This is excluding the cost of the body of the plane, radio control transmitter device, servo motors, and all other necessary components needed by the airplane to fly. In contrast, a complete set of EDF jet powered aircraft only costs one hundred seventy dollars at the minimum.
Perhaps the best flying RC toy that you may wish to have are those which are powered by gas turbines. This is the crème of the crop when it comes down to jet powered RC toys. This particular engine uses impellers, fuel injectors, combustion chambers, and turbines much like a real jet turbine. It gives the hobbyist the feel, sound, and the power of a real jet. Obviously, the cost is quite steep for this type of aircraft since a single engine alone could cost more than two thousand dollars at the minimum which is why these particular types of RC toys are reserved for really serious hobbyists who have enough money to spare.
Jet powered RC toys are gradually taking over the skies. They have become more popular than their early counterparts because of their stylish looks and design. In time, if the cost of the engines will go down, these particular flying RC toys will undoubtedly lord over the skies.
