Hand Punch

Of the many techniques in Wing Chun, Lopsao is without a doubt one of the most powerful. This jerking grab and punch is much like a head on collision multiplying the force and trapping the enemies hand rendering him helpless.

Your attacked unaware and all that you have the time to do is to thrust your right hand across your body and coming up on the outside of your opponent's punch, you grab his wrist. Your hand slides down his arm like a bracelet until it hooks at the wrist just above the hand. You jerk very hard pulling him forward off balance. His neck is whip lashed by this powerful pull and his brain slams into his skull. What he doesn't realize yet is that the worst is yet to come. He probably wont see it, maybe not even feel it,but he is about to be struck by a vertical punch that will in all likely hood render him unconscious. This is what Wing Chun calls Pac Da "Pull & Strike".

To deliver a good Lopsao, or Jerk, your right pulling hand starts off on th outside of the attackers wrist, palm up. It turns palm down grabbing his wrist with your thumb and middle fingers. Your elbow pulls in close to your side, your waist turning hard to your right. At that same time, your left punch fires straight from your centerline about chest height in a straight line directly into the attackers face. This should be enough to stop him in his tracks. At least it would in a perfect world. This however is not a perfect world. He palm blocks your punch.

The palm block, which is called pacsao in Cantonese, slaps across his face pushing your punch left to right. That's where Seyoung Lop Da comes in. For those of you who don't speak Chinese that means Double Lop Da (Double Grab and Punch).

So when your punch is blocked you simply grab that wrist with your left hand,do a lopsao and punch him in the face again. This time however, he is unable to block as you have crossed both his arms trapping them, and is unable to avoid your strike.

This then is the powerful technique of Wing Chun "Lop Da" Grab and Strike!

How To Improve Punch Speed

The "right" punch has several components. The speed at which the arm moves to throw a punch, the speed of the shoulder, the angle at which the body is poised, the footwork and breathing rate - all of these contribute to making a punch the "perfect punch".

Many a times you feel that your punch lacks speed. All of the above components contribute equally to the speed of your punch. The punch speed and punch power are directly proportional. The higher the speed, the better power your punch will have. If you compromise on one of the parameters, the punch loses speed and hence the power. Practicing at the heavy bag or the punching bag is an age old and proven technique to improve both the speed and power of your punches.

Before you attack the punching bag, be sure to warm up. In the start, keep punching slowly at the bag. As you practice, gradually increase the speed and power of the punches. An easy technique to bring in speed to your punches is to hold weight like the dumbbells in your hand and punching in the air. Here again, gradually increase the weight in your hands. You can also use weighted gloves but if you are using them be sure to avoid the punching bag.

If you are comfortable at the present punching bag, get a heavier one. Keep your body a little away from the bag and feet at comfortable distance apart. As you punch the bag extend yourself a little, throwing the punch at maximum power. Repeated practice of this posture punching helps improve the speed considerably.

Many preach that shadow boxing helps in increasing the speed. It does not use complete punching techniques and may not really help you achieve a greater punch speed.

Have you tried plyometrics to improve your punch speed? Plyometrics is a type of exercise aimed to improve speed and thereby power of movements. It also improves the functions of the nervous system. The design of these exercises is based on the fact that when a muscle is loaded and then contracted in quick successions, the plyometric movements use the strength and elasticity of the muscles to make the surrounding tissues to quicken their movements. Hence, these exercises will help you hit faster and harder.

Remember increasing punch speed is not going to happen overnight or in fact over a few weeks it is something that needs to be worked on continually. If you put in the hard work and follow the above you will see your punch speed increase. When training just try and focus on how much you will improve your boxing, when your feeling tired and don't feel like doing a drill remember your opponent is probably training right now. If you out train your opponent you will outbox them too.

All the techniques can be used in together to improve the punch speed. But remember that constant practice is required and the speed will not increase in just a day.

Can you break someones hand when they punch you by catching it with a headbutt?

A lot of people said that's possible and im just curious and have doubt that its impossible.
ok not exactly catching it. hahaha, but more like you see the punch coming and have no time to react with you hands or anything else. you lung your head forward quickly and headbutt the punch. yeah i imagine you'll get hurt but the other person will get the worse...thats what i as imagining.

Actually catching a punch with your head... that's a disturbing mental image.

For those of you that aren't telepathic, I'm picture someone wrist deep in someone else's forehead.

If you intercept the punch with spot on form it's possible you'll break a bone or two in the hand. Human anatomy really isn't meant for punching so breaks are likely.

I think the only place you'll see this is the movies. When I use my head to stop a punch it's usually in a far less literal capacity.
