Aircraft fire detection systems

Both discrete and continuous fire detection systems work as detectors of overheating or fire, but both are susceptible to damage by the very condition they are monitoring. The fire or jet of hot gas that leads to the temperature rise can easily burn through the wiring or the sensor. The system must be designed so that if this does occur, then the warning is not extinguished. Equally the system must be designed so that no warnings are given when there is no fire. Both these conditions are dangerous. The first because the crew may think that a fire has been extinguished, the second because a system which continually gives spurious warnings may be disregarded when a real fire occurs.

Fire testing ISO 2685

This is why fire testing ISO 2685 is so critical, testing of airborne equipment resistance to fire in designated zones ISO2685:1998 and aircraft interiors fire performance to FAA 14 CFR:Part 25. Fire testing of fuselage burnthrough resistance is very much after a crash has become inevitable and the fight for survival has begun. Seat covers flammability testing is also used to gauge surviveability once disaster has become inevitable and needs to be appropriately managed.

Once a fire warning is observed a formal drill is initiated by the crew to extinguish the fire. This will include shutting down the engine and isolating the fuel system at the engine fire-wall by closing a cock in the fuel system, and then discharging extinguisher fluid into the bay.

This is done by pressing a switch in the cockpit (often a switch built into the fire warning lamp) which fires a cartridge built into a bottle containing a fluid such as BromoChlorodiFluoromethane (BCF). This causes a spray of fluid to be directed into the engine bay. Usually the bottles are single shot. If, after discharging the bottle, the fire warning remains, the crew must decide if the warning is genuine. In a commercial aircraft this can be done by looking out of a window to see if flames can be seen in the engine nacelle, in a military aircraft by asking another aircraft to observe from behind. If a fire is confirmed then the aircraft must be landed as soon as possible, or abandoned.

Modern fluids have been developed, which do not contain environmentally harmful fluoro-carbon materials and are being introduced to meet mandatory regulations (Montreal Protocol).

aviation-database.com has lots of resources for the aircraft industry. The web is a vast source of information. Aviation-database collects the industry into one huge database of contacts. Fire testing ISO2685 is an article giving technical guidance from Darchem Flare, one of the companies worldwide providing this service.

The Versatile Field Of Avionics

Avionics is an exciting field. When you have watched movies where they show the cockpit, you must have noticed the large number of controls and displays. That is what Avionics is all about.

Avionics is a contraction of the two words Aviation and Electronics. Formerly Avionics was all about military application; in the 40's most of the operating systems which were involved in aircrafts were either mechanical, electric, radio-frequency based, or magnetic in nature, and the subsequent invention of radar in detecting enemy planes during World War II ushered in the development of a whole new category of electronic navigational devices.

As the vacuum tubes gave way to integrated circuits, the field of avionics truly took birth in the 70s. Foreseeing the vast potential for this relatively new field of technology, industry specialists took the applications from the military into the area of civilian aircraft development.

Avionics is currently becoming an increasingly versatile field, with its applications bleeding out from the aerospace industry, and into commercial shipping, and naval and terrestrial vehicle navigation, where the need to quickly process data in real-time is ever more urgent. Be it money spent on research in the field of aircrafts, or money spent to buy aircraft, most of it goes into avionics and this field has evolved from being an auxiliary part of an aircraft, to the essential reason for its existence.

The field of Avionics is now of paramount importance in aircraft engineering. This is because Avionics is the brain of the aircraft. This system is primarily located in the cockpit of the aircraft, and operates autonomously under the supervision of the pilot. Aircraft avionics can be broken down into different fields, each with a specialized purpose of its own.

Avionics started with communication. There are many more aspects to avionics, but it is still highly focused on communication. This also involves onboard communication means, like public address systems and intercoms. Navigation is crucial for determining the precise position and direction of the aircraft above the Earth's surface, such as the Global Positioning System.

Certainly anyone would expect the display in aircrafts to be highly robust. These provide user-friendly systems of determining aircraft altitude and heading, both for the pilot and the aircrew.

Aircraft flight control systems are used to take off the burden from the pilot at crucial situations, such as during the landing maneuver or while hovering; these tasks are usually done by the system in order to minimize the chances of pilot error. Avoiding collisions is possible with Avionic systems designed specifically for that purpose.

Weather systems are used to gauge weather patterns on the aircrafts flight path, and allows the pilot to consider evasive options in case the results are unfavorable; currently, satellite systems have been of great assistance to navigation, as the aircraft can assess weather conditions which are too far away to be detected by in-flight systems.

The different systems that talk to each other are cumulatively called the Aircraft management system. Its tasks include monitoring the status of the engines, to measuring minute changes in pressure. I would like to think of the avionic aircraft management system as the heart and the brain of an aircraft.

Fat Bob Gas Tank Gauge?

Do they make a gas gauge for fat bob gas tanks with aircraft type flush caps?
(not screw type caps). Thanks
1999 Night Train
Fat Bob Tanks
Currently No Gauge

Does your bike currently have a fuel level guage??? What year and model? Or custom tanks?

Give more details....

If your tanks aren't set up for a feul level sending unit, you can't add one, no-one makes one and the cost to do a custom fabbed job is not worth the expense and looks like $hlT. Tanks that are built to accept an HD sending unit are built with a tube inside the tank for the wiring needed for the unit. Standard old-style fat-bob tanks don't have this and can't EASILY and COST-EFFECTIVELY be modified to with with a sending unit.

EDIT...Sorry to be the bearer of bad news...not much you can do. That model doesn't have the capability of adding a guage. The tanks won't accecpt a sending unit and the bike doesn't have the wiring needed. Frame and tank design prevent from converting to a Dyna Wide Glide tank design, so that option is out also.
This is why HD redeisgned the frame and tank design on the 2000-up Softail Chassis.
Just use the trip meter...fill up every 125-150 miles and you'll never run out.
