88 cadillac eldorado constant fuel flow/high idle?
Throttle body plates not lying flat during idle causing constant fuel flow/ high idle. Where do I look to fix this.
A throttle body will flow fuel constantly. It's the only way it stays running. The high idle is most likely due to a vacuum hose broken or disconnected.
The throttle plates are supposed to have a bit of angle to them. Do not for any reason manually adjust the idle. Just find the problem causing the high idle.
I should add that if there is not a plug in the screw that adjusts the throttle plate position than it is possible it was tampered with before. This screw is NOT there to adjust the idle speed or mixture! It is there to set a minimum air rate, that is all. If adjusted it will change a number of things both connected and others not connected but in the system.
Your Idle Air Control Valve(crazy eh?!) is what controls the idle speed. A high idle means that there is air entering the intake at a rate beyond that vehicles ability to control.
A propane bottle torch(NOT LIT) can help you find the leak. Just turn it on and move it around the intake manifold and all vacuum connections, and listen for the idle to change when the propane is drawn in.
