Leaning an aircraft engine w/ monitor?

I recently had installed an Electronics International instrument to monitor my '74 Arrow engine (single probe with EGT/CHT/OAT). However, when I start to pull back on the mixture control from full rich the EGT temperature actually starts to drop right away as I'm pulling back slowly. I'm completely confused as to why this is happening as I would normally expect for the EGT to increase until I hit peak.

Additional facts: As I always did when flying a Cessna 172, I never really start leaning until I'm at cruise altitude (usually 4-5K) with reduced power (24" manifold and 2400 RPM). Does the lower power setting affect the instrument or is there something else going on, or possibly the instrument installed incorrectly? It seems also that I can pull back the mixture for the fuel flow gauge to show only 8.5 gph and my EGT still showing between 1,300 and 1,325 degrees. Cylinder temps are always right around 300 degrees.

You might be leaning it too fast. Lots of EGTs take a good ten seconds to get a stable reading.

What I do is use the fuel flow for initial leaning, then fine tune with the EGT.

Also, make sure you are doing it in cruise. Don't lean by EGT when climbing (unless you have a turbo and are keeping it above TIT limits). Your engine needs all that fuel to keep cool.
