Many people buy a new PC because it has become slow, or to update to a newer operating system for ease of use, or maybe the new facilities offered by a newer operating system. The old computer still works, it is just that it has slowed down or inadequate for some of the newer processor intensive tasks that users commonly carry out these days, such as video making, HD DVD movie playing, and processing high quality digital camera images.

In fact many people would really like to feel that they are not wasting the remaining life of their old system, and do wonder what they could be using it for. In this article we will give you our list of the uses which really can usefully utilize these old computer systems at little or no cost.

It just takes a little time and effort to research these uses and get going on such projects.

1. The first and really most obviously useful thing to do with you old PC system is to use it as a server to hold back-ups of you most important files. You can do this by un-installing all the software programs which you originally installed on that machine, just keeping your personal files. If you had a large number of applications installed, which presumably you have already moved in to your new PC, your old PC will speed up. De-fragmenting the hard drive using suitable software will also help, as will running registry clean-up software such as the free version of CCleaner.

Older windows operating systems, however, can be quite difficult to set up as servers, which allow other home computers to access them, and write to other PCs, due to the less than completely logical application of security from PC code hackers and security scams. So, many people are successfully deleting the Windows operating system from these old PCs, with which they were bought, and installing Linux server operating system compilations. For example iBuntu gives away a version which is a cut-down Linux operating system for this purpose. It is also completely free of charge, as long as you do not require their support service. Most people who can follow instructions, will use their set up wizards which simplify the whole installation process, and complete the installation without difficulty.

Once installed you will be able to back up all your important files to this central location. There is a simple backup program in newer Windows operating systems. If you have an older operating system, you can use a free backup system such as the one provided on SourceForge.

If you have other old drives from other old PCs, and if you have a desktop type PC, you should be able to add one or possibly two of these to your server, by physically removing them and fixing them into a spare drive bay in the server.

2. The second suggestion is to buy a copy of Windows Home Server and use that instead of a cut-down Linux operating system, as in 1. above. It is not expensive at about $60 and will allow you to do all the above backup operations, but Windows home Server is set up really easily for those more used to Microsoft software, and it will also run on really slow PCs.

3. Number three is more of a specialist niche use for your old PC. Why not again, as before, remove all your old programs by un-installing them, and then convert your PC into a retro games arcade machine? Even a 5-year-old PC will be capable of running an emulator for games dating back to the early 1990's and those that remember some of the old classics will enjoy a nostalgic return to zapping invaders using an arcade emulator. One that is well-known, is free, and runs in Windows, is called MAME and it works great on the types of PCs which are commonly being thrown away.

4. Finally, you can use your old PC to run old software, and use old peripherals (scanners, digitizing pads, specialist printers etc.), that won't run on new operating systems, usually because the manufacturer has failed to support the new operating system by providing drivers. This can be far more economical than upgrading software, and/or buying replacement hardware peripheral equipment.

There it is then, we have given you 4 suggestions for revitalizing your old PC, to provide security for your valuable, and probably irreplaceable data (such as, digital images of your family), plus offering you ideas for additional features for all the family who can use the common family server, and fun in playing favourite old games.

We hope you enjoyed reading this article and that the suggestions we have given are useful. Many people have already used ideas like these for their old PCs, and have enjoyed the results, so we hope you do too.

How Much Does a Jet Charter Cost?

In this case, it is clear that you will not be chartering a jet. Asking the question how much does a jet charter cost will come back with all manner of different answers. Looking into some of the cheaper options, you might find that the cost of chartering a jet is far less than you might imagine. Of course, if you were to look into chartering some of the more expensive aircraft, you will find that the question of how much does a jet charter cost comes with a heavy price tag indeed. For many, the concept of chartering a jet is simply beyond their means. In other cases, chartering a jet can be an expensive and easy to accomplish. Whatever your situation might be, there is very likely a specific chartering service that will work for you.

It is important to keep in mind that when calculating the cost of a jet charter, you must also calculate the cost of the pilot, the crew and even flight attendants, if there are any. With so much effort being made to understand the costs associated with chartering a jet, the question of how much does a jet charter cost can be difficult indeed to answer without conducting extensive research. If you don't mind flying in a smaller aircraft, such as a Cessna, then chartering a jet can be somewhat inexpensive. But for those who require a large plane or the modern, state-of-the-art conveniences, the cost will be significantly higher. It is also important to keep in mind that just because a specific aircraft is somewhat smaller or older, this does not necessarily mean that they are prone to accidents or that you are any less safe. Aircraft generally go through a rigorous inspection procedure that is undertaken at regular intervals. Worn-out parts are replaced and the only thing that stays the same over time is the basic airframe. Even this is reinforced in specific points and required to hold up to a particular level of scrutiny. Generally, the only reason to spend more on a jet charter is to get a larger plan, or to spring for luxurious amenities that might not be available on the smaller aircraft such as a Cessna.

Naturally, anyone asking the question how much does a jet charter cost will very likely be unhappy with any answer that is outside of their budget. Fortunately, whatever your budget might be, there is very likely a jet charter service that can accommodate you and allow you to focus on this type of aircraft use. As you consider the options and find out how much a jet charter actually costs, you'll find all manner of different variables that make all the difference in the world. For those who are registered pilots, flying the plane your self can save you money. In other cases, utilizing a smaller crew or aircraft can mitigate costs as well. Focusing on these types of savings can make a tremendous amount of difference for those who are trying to cut back on costs when asking the question how much does a jet charter cost.

What is the blue book equivalent for air planes?

my old Cessna sky hawks engine seized in mid air after I just took off from the runway and had to turn around. So I had some repairmen look at the plane to see what it would cost to have it fixed. unfortunately it had a list full of other problems as well so I had to scrap it and now I'm trying to look for a replacement. What would be a good reference for buying a new/used airplane.

There actually are two valuation books (neither are very accurate by the way) Aviation Blue Book Digest and VREF. Both require careful reading to use correctly! You also have no way to "Grade" the airframe itself but either will give a ballpark value for light aircraft. They use the "average" aircraft as a basis which is somewhat speculative. If you are a member of AOPA then you can use VREF on the AOPA site to get values.

The best shopping site really is Trade A Plane http://tradeaplane.com As well as Aircraft Shopper http://aso.com and the Controller http://controller.com

Trade A Plane's site also has the NAAA (National Aircraft Appraisers Association) Market Evaluation program on site. The data is as accurate as your input but is about a month or so old.

If you want a really accurate value, hire an Appraiser for the specific aircraft. http://plane-values.com
