Bladed High

Wind powered generators have been used for thousands of years starting in Persia as early as 200 B.C. Initially these were used for the main method of grinding corn and to draw water from the ground. Leading on from this in 1887 came the first electricity producing, battery charging wind generators with output yields of up to 25kw by 1908. By the 1930s Commercial wind powered generators become extremely common on large yielding farms.

There are two main types of wind powered generators. The horizontal-axis wind turbine, and the vertical-axis variation, both having their advantages. The turbines used in commercial wind farms for the production of high yielding electricity are usually three bladed, being controlled by computers and motors allowing very high tips speeds of over 200 mp/h, high efficiency and low torque ripple which contribute to very good reliability.

Horizontal-axis Wind Turbines

The main rotor and electrical generator sit at the top of these turbines and must be pointed into the wind. The smaller horizontal-axis wind turbines are pointed by a wind vane (an instrument showing wind direction) while the larger turbines use a more sophisticated wind sensor along with a servo motor which corrects position and performance of the turbine automatically. These larger turbines are usually controlled by a gearbox that turns the slow rotating blades into a faster rotation required to drive an electric generator.

The main advantages of horizontal-axis wind turbines:

  • Optimum angle using variable blade pitch. This allows remote control of the angle of wind attack thus giving higher control and maximizing the amount of wind energy for any given time of day or season.
  • Access to stronger winds in sites with wind shear utilizing the tall tower base, allowing an increase in wind speed by 20% and power output by 34% for every 10 metres in elevation.
  • The blades are always perpendicular to the wind bringing extremely high efficiency and generating power from the whole rotation of the blades.
  • The wind strikes the horizontal blades at a consistent angle, which is not determined by the the blades position, thus resulting in consistent wind loading over the full course of a rotation and reducing vibrations and noises created by the turbine.

Vertical-axis Wind Turbines

These turbines have the main rotor shaft set up vertically, the main advantage of the vertical-axis wind turbine is that is does not need to be pointed into the wind to be effective giving a major advantage on sites where the wind direction is commonly variable.

The generator and gearbox can be mounted close to the ground as it is difficult to mount vertical-axis turbines on top of a tower, meaning the tower doesn't need to support it and is more accessible for maintenance. Less wind speed is available at lower altitude so less energy is produced for any given size of turbine.

With the air flow close to the ground producing turbulent flow this introduces issues of vibration noise and bearing wear and causing an increase in maintenance over a shorter period of time.

The main advantages of vertical-axis wind turbines:

  • There is less usage of huge towers as the lower bearing is mounted closer to the ground.
  • Easy to maintain with the generator being located near the ground.
  • Low wind start up speeds creating electricity at around 6 mp/h
  • The turbines can be built at locations where it is prohibited for tall structures.
  • Where hilltops or rigelines funnel wind and increase velocity; being low to the ground enables these turbines to takes full advantage.

With the huge change in climate over the past decade the rush for renewable energy is rapidly increasing. Commercial wind powered generators allow for massively reduced energy bills with long term investment opportunities and future stability.

Companies like Ewind Ltd have extensive knowledge and experience with the supply of a full range of wind development services and present attractive returns on investment with field performance proven wind turbines being supplied by the leading manufacturers.

High Temperature Fans, Blowers, Ventilators

A new type of high temperature fans and blowers for operating up to 2,200 F is introduced by Tenderall Blower Co. which has increased again the operating temperature limit of its unique line of super high temperature fans and blowers for industrial applications to 2200 F. This was achived by using extremely high strength stainless steel alloys for the fans impellers, that allow for higher safe speeds at elevated temperatures. High temperature exotic ceramics are also used for ventilator impellers.

The Tenderall high temperature oven fans line now include:

- Pre-engineered and custom made fans for all types of applications with vaiety of impeller types and accessories;
- Operating up to 2200 F, centrifugal, axial and plug fan types;
- Canada Blower engineers provide a professional advice and recommend a right fan for every application & oven / plenum design;
- Unique high temperature water-cooled motors for operation up to 2300 F:
- The fan offering provides competitive replacement fans to Garden City, Lau, IGE, Alloy Fabricating fan models; repairs, re-build & balancing.

There are two major types of Tenderall high temperature fans - axial and centrifugal:

Axial Blade Fans:

    * The axial blade wheel is usually specified where there is a need for very large volumes of air flows against low static pressure.   Axial wheel like the multi-blade forward curve type wheel could cause an axial fan to deliver different air volumes at the same static pressure, if the total pressure requirement of the fan system was underestimated. This type of fan is ideally suited where a large volume of flow is required with a minimum of duct work and is used extensively for small and large furnaces, such as aluminum annealing.

Centrifugal Fan:

    * Radial Blade, paddle wheel type fans.  This type of wheel is usually specified where there is a necessity for medium volumes of flow against medium to large static pressures. The paddle wheel is considered a self cleaning type of wheel.  It could be used where there are various materials or dust in the air stream.  Due to its structurally strong design, it is used in many heat treatment applications at very high temperatures where maximum fan longevity is desired.
    * Multiblade forward curve wheel.  This type of wheel is usually specified where there is a necessity for large volumes of flow against low to medium static pressure requirements.  The forward curve blade is that it delivers the same volume of air as either the backward or radial blade wheel, at a lower fan speed, which is important due to wheel stresses at elevated temperatures.  This fan is the most common type used in all types of heat treatment operations except where a buildup of material on the blades could occur, as wheel unbalance would result.

High temperature centrifugal fans are available in both housed free-standing fan configuration and in non-housed plug fan / air-kit design. High temperature axial plug fans can be unhoused plug fans with or without fan shroud / diffuser, or in tubeaxial / vaneaxial configuration with forced air belt tunnel colling cooling system by auxiliary cooling blower.

Expandables........?

Ok, lemme have it.....Pros and Cons. I have been shooting Rocky Mountain heads for YEARS and will only shoot Rockies. I currently shoot 100gr., 3bld. Advantage heads, and have been kicking the idea around of trying either their 2 bladed Snyper 100, Gator XP or the Snyper XP3.

I have seen some testimonials on all of them, and they apparently work well but I would like some other input.

I doubt it will help in your comments, but I currently shoot a High Country Brute Force, set at 69lbs and shoot 27' Carbon Express arrows through a shoot thru rest.

Alrighty.......impress me or make me doubt my decision to change.

i also shoot 100gr. and i love expandables, they usualy have a larger cutting diameter and fly better than the fixed blades. they shoot much more like a field point, i was skeptical at first too i dont shoot rockies though i shoot spitfire1 1/2 in cut for deer or wasp jackhammers ( for turkeys the 1 3/4 cut is awsome). i saw someone recomend rage they are good broadheads if you get some from a good batch, i was informed by my local archery dealer that they had a recall on thousands of them due to a design flaw on the newer ones that did not allow the blades to open due to a round spot on the cam..... ill stick to my orings and know that they will open
