Opthalmologists, the healthiest sunglasses?
Opthalmologists, or at least sufficiently qualified opticians, if money was no object, and you wanted a pair of aviator style sunglasses, with 100% UV protection, what would you buy AND why?
Would having polarized lenses really give extra benefit, or is it not really necessary?
Also, the lenses would ideally be impact and scratch resistant. So what would you go for?
Well, if you are buying an aviator style sunglass frame, the first question to ask - are you an aviator, are you a pilot? If you are, then I definitely would Not put you in polarized lenses since those lenses would prevent you from seeing the readouts on your instrument panel. But since most of us are not pilots, then, I assume you are not.
What would I recommend (always)? Polarized lenses, most definately. The reason being is that polarized lenses Eliminate reflected glare and allow you to see much more clearly than just regular tinted lenses. If you live where there's snow, then you know the sun shining off the snow can really blind you - same way with rain on a highway with the sun reflecting off it. Polarized lenses completely eliminate that glare. Now, having said that, the next question I would ask is what color lens? There are two main colors - gray and brown. Grey polarized lenses are a little darker than brown and they do not change the hues of colors. Grass is still green, etc. Brown lenses will change the hues of colors ever so slightly But brown lenses increase contrast and are excellent for driving. The other thing I always recommend with polarized lenses is Backsided Anti Reflective coating. Since the lens is dark, then light will shine in through the sides of the frame and reflect off the back side of the dark lens causing a reflection that goes right into your pupil, thereby limiting visual acuity. Backside AR coating will allow that light to pass through the lens more effectively and will help eliminate the problem of reflection on the back of the lens. For "wrap" frames, the backside AR coat is not really necessary.
All polarized lenses have scratch coating built right in and they are also 100% UV protected. You can't get a polarized lens without that. The price of that lens should include both, if it doesn't, and they try to charge you for scratch coat or UV protection, then leave the optical place because they are trying to rip you off. As far as impact resistance, all lenses dispensed, no matter what they are, must meet FDA requirements for impact resistance. If you want more impact resistance than "normal" then you need to go to polycarbonate or trivex material, that will provide the most impact resistance. You can also get polarized lenses put in safety frames that will conform to OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) standards for impact resistance. If you do that, though, the lenses will be thicker.
The last time I sold regular tinted sunglasses (frames and lenses) was about a year and a half ago. I really sell nothing but polarized lenses. However, sometimes when a person has very little change in their Rx, I will, at their request, tint and uv their old lenses so they can use them as sunglasses. The reason? It saves them some money (and it makes a little more profit for us).
