2 questions about aviation headsets.?
1.) What type of connectors are used in standard pilot headsets, ones that would be found in GA aircraft like the 172? Are they 3.5mm or something for which an adapter from 3.5mm is available?
2.) Is there any FAR or other FAA reg. controlling aviation headsets? I've been Sim flying for a while and will be starting flight school soon and am wondering if my Saitek Headset could be used in the real plane too. This one http://www.amazon.com/Saitek-PH09-Pro-Flight-Headset/dp/B001EYU1WI its got two (one for mic one for headphones) 3.5mm connectors.
Is there any sort of adapter to use 3.5mm plugs in a GA aircraft? Links?

there is no regulation regarding headsets that you (as a pilot) need to be concerned with.
The FAA provides requirements for certifying aviation pilot headsets in accordance with FAA regulations called TSO (Technical
Standard Order) However, there is no FAA regulation requiring the use of FAA TSO-approved aviation pilot headsets
In your typical general aviation aircraft,A standard 1/4″ monaural plug, type PJ-055, is used for headphones, paired with special tip-ring-sleeve, 0.206 inch diameter plug, type PJ-068, for the microphone. The extra connection in the microphone plug is used by an optional push-to-talk switch.
Your head set will not work.
Consider hearing PROTECTION as well as communicating with your choice of headsets. I wish I had for the last 25+ years. As a result of either not using ANY, or inferior headsets, my life long exposure to the noise of a piston airplane engine and that at the airport has left me completely deaf in one ear and 25% loss in the other. Choose wisely!
