When it comes to card tricks, the term "self-working" really means "doesn't require sleight of hand." This could mean gimmicked decks, mathematical or topological principles, and more. In this article, we'll learn a classic, quick effect that depends on a topological principle.

Gimmicked Decks

Before I get to the effect at hand, I would like to briefly introduce you to the two most popular gimmicked decks in the world. The first one is called the Svengali deck. In a Svengali deck, every other card is the same. For example, every other card might be the Ace of Diamonds. Also, these duplicate cards are cut a little shorter than the deck's 26 indifferent cards. As a result, if you riffle the cards in one direction, they appear to all be the same. If you riffle them the other way, the appear to all be different! Needless to say, this renders possible some apparent miracles!

Another gimmicked deck is called the Stripper deck. In the Stripper deck, the sides of the cards are cut at a slightly tapered angle. Because of this fact, any card that has been reversed (turned around) in the deck can be easily "stripped" out. An advantage of the Stripper deck over the Svengali deck is that it can be examined by your spectators. The trick in this article, however, can be performed with a completely ordinary deck.

The Effect, Preparation, & Execution

A card is selected and replaced. The deck is taken behind the magician's back, and when it is brought forth, the selected card is seen to be facing up in a face-down deck, or vice-versa. To prepare, secretly reverse the bottom card of the deck. Spread the cards between your hands, offering them to a spectator, whom you ask to select one. Be carreful not to spread too far, otherwise your spectators will see the previously reversed card on the bottom.

While your spectator is looking at their card, and perhaps showing it to a few of their friends, square up the deck, and secretly turn it over. It will now look normal, but it's really a face-up deck, with a face-down card on top. Insert their card face-down into this deck. Be careful to keep the deck squared as you do so, because you don't want to reveal the true state of affairs to your onlookers. As a result of your actions thus far, the spectator's card is now face-down in a face-up deck, with the exception of that face-down card on top.

Take all of this behind your back, reverse that top card, then reverse the entire deck. Now, when you bring the deck back out from behind your back and spread it, the chosen card will be the only face-up card it contains. If you would rather end with the deck face-up and the card face-down, simply reverse the top card behind your back, then bring the deck out and spread it. It's a nice touch of showmanship here to have them name the card before you turn it over. This is one of the simplest, yet most effective self-working card tricks that you can do. Enjoy!

Direct Sales - The Do's and Don'ts of Networking on Twitter

When it comes to using the social media site Twitter, there are a few Do's and Don'ts you need to be aware of.

Let's start with the Do's

1. Fill out your twitter profile so that others can learn a little more about you and your Direct Sales business. If possible, upload a small picture of yourself or a small business graphic. However, you will find that most twitter users prefer to see a personal photo compared to a business photo.

2. You will need to be consistent with your tweeting. You can't just log in once a day, post 2 tweets and then jet out. You need to spend a little time tweeting about what is going on with your day or your business, so that you can build a relationship with your followers.

3. Try to connect with your followers by responding to their tweets or re-tweeting their messages. Twitter can be useful when it comes to business relationship building, if you take the time to converse with the people who are following you.

Here are a few Don'ts

1. Don't send automatic direct messages. There are numerous online services where you can sign up and have the service automatically send out a direct message, to every person who decides to follow you. Experienced tweeters find this to be impersonal and very annoying.

2. Never spam your business website links or business information via direct message unless a specific person has requested the information from you.

3. Don't sit on twitter 24 hours a day spamming business links. If you are only there for self business promotion and not there to build business relationships, you will be quickly labeled as a twitter spammer.

When it comes to networking on social media websites like twitter...it is important to make connections with those you are following. In a nutshell, business networking means building quality relationships with other like-mind individuals.
