Guitar Players should view guitar cables as the bloodstream and guitar amp as the body of their guitar setup. Here, I want to talk about the soul of your setup, the guitar strings.

Guitar strings can be grouped into two categories as follows:

Lighter gauge strings:

1) Less volume

2) Duller tone
3) Shorter sustain
4) Easier to press down
5) Bends easily

Heavier gauge strings:
1) More volume
2) Clearer tone
3) Harder to play
4) Less buzzing

5) Thicker sound

As you can see, the overall tone and feel you get differs extensively according to the string gauge you choose to play with. There's also a medium gauge which I have not include in. Yup that's right. Medium gauge strings are in the in-between range between the light and heavy gauge. Personally, I don't like and have not use medium gauge strings ever since I understand the difference between the two categories. I really prefer to use strings in the lighter/heavier gauge range than to use strings in the medium gauge.

Playing style can also determine the string gauge you need. For a start, most string benders will favour lighter string gauge. However, lighter string gauge will actually bend with so little effort that players tend to play sharp when playing normal chords. While some players opt for lighter gauge strings to aid their string bending skills, others may find them too easy to bend out of tone.

Slide guitarists tends to use heavy gauge strings on their guitars. Those heavy tension strings seems just the right fit for those thick and clear sound.

The material from which the string is made from will also affect the tone and sound. For acoustic instruments, there are Phospher-Bronze strings, Bronze Strings, Coated strings, Silk and Steel Strings and a host of others. It is very tricky to match the perfect set of strings for your favourite guitar. The material on a set of strings may sound good on brand A guitar while killing the sound of brand B guitar.

For electric guitar strings, there are Nickel strings, Stainless Steel strings, Coated strings and many more. You will also find that you have a choice of flat-wound, semi-round and round-wound strings, giving the player a choice of feel as well as sound.

As a word of advice, stick to the same gauge while experimenting with different materials and you should be well on your way to strings mastery. Have Fun!
