Gps Systems For Bicycles
If you are into bicycling, a GPS system can help you to find your way. Models start with those that offer limited navigation capabilities and range all the way up to specialized workout devices. There are several types of devices from which you can select depending on your needs.
A GPS with bicycling-friendly functions can help you take your workouts to the next level. The Garmin Edge is a well-known series. Besides navigation, you have the ability to track your workout and exercise goals. Do you like to race? With some units, you can race against a Virtual Partner. If you want detailed workout information, look for a model that has a heart rate monitor and cadence and speed sensors. The most advanced model gives you the capability to share data such as routes with other riders that have the same device and the more precise altitude measurement functions found with the included barometric altimeter. Do you need to use an ANT-enabled power meter? You can find this capability on at least one Garmin Edge.
A GPS-enabled smartphone or cell phone may be an option for you. If you are chiefly wanting navigation functions and are not worried about tracking your workout or remembering routes, this may be a cheaper way to go. Riding one-handed while trying to consult your cell phone probably isn't the best idea. Paying for connection time could prove to be costly depending on your plan.
If you have a handheld or auto GPS system, you may have the option to find clips or other hardware to mount it to your bike. Be sure that the mounting kit is sturdy, as some may not be able to stand up to harsh road conditions. Be sure that the device is water-resistant unless you plan to never get caught in a rainstorm. Mounting keeps your hands free so you can concentrate on your ride. Again, this is a good option if you are just looking for navigation help.
You may also just want to bring along a portable GPS that doesn't mount to your bike. Like using a cell phone, using the device while riding could get tricky. Pulling over to check the map may be acceptable to you.
Another option is a GPS watch. Some of these allow you to store workouts. With some watches, a heart rate monitor is included along with the capability to track calories burned.
If you are riding in unfamiliar areas, a GPS can be very useful. Any of the options mentioned above will help you track your location. For the serious bicyclist, one of the Garmin Edge models is best for you.
