i tried to make a supercritical fluid extractor, but why didn't it work? here is what i did:?
i used a 20 oz co2 tank filled with a 1/2 pound of dry, ground lavender and 1/2 pound co2. in line was a porous metal filter, the a regualor then a valve. at room temp, the pressure was 550 psi so i heated the cylander until it reached 1300 psi and then opened the valve into a glass jar. out came only gas, into the jar and then into the air. The gas was especailly fragrent but there was no essencial oil. why?
Did the oil get carried away in the gas? Was there no fluid to carry the oil? i know that the industrial method is to first soak the plant mater in a liquid solvient, separate it, and then extract from the solvient.
or is there some other reason i'm missing?
a good organic solvent to use is plain old rubbing alcohol (less dangerous as well). Just let it soak for 3 or so days in it and that can isolate the essence.
