Few people pay much attention to what's under stored products - unless something goes wrong. In a warehouse, decking becomes much more than something to hold cartons, crates and pallets. That's why it's such an important part of the warehousing equipment equation. It can improve storage capability and enhance personnel safety.
It comes in a wide range of materials and configurations. We'll examine a few of them here.
Wire decking. Wire decking on pallet racks contributes to the prevention of product damage and personnel injury when it's installed on pallet racks, wide-span shelving and rivet shelving systems. Made with welded steel mesh, it installs quickly and easily. To support the load, channels are welded to the bottom of the deck between pallet rack beams. One of the key advantages to this system is a cleaner shelf level. Dust and debris have difficulty accumulating. Additionally, it allows light and fire sprinkler water to pass through, improving safety.
Wood decking. Plywood or particleboard creates a strong and solid base on which to place palletized and non-palletized items. It is also an inexpensive alternative.
Solid metal decking. For palletized and non-palletized items, solid metal offers a stronger alternative to wire decking. Yet it's still easy to install and fire-resistant. It's a cost-effective, functional way to provide a smooth surface for easy product removal.
Perforated rain decking. In the event of a fire, perforated rain decking allows sprinkler water to flow through the levels of the storage system. It meets or exceeds fire code requirements and has load capacities similar to those of solid metal. Ideal for storing items that might fall through wire decking, perforated rain decking features a smooth top and bottom surface.
B decking. The most common form of structural roof deck, it's also known as b-deck, roof deck or corrugated steel - is an excellent choice for a mezzanine floor. It's strong, economical and lightweight. B decking can be used as a sub floor with other surfaces, such as plywood, resin-coated plywood or diamond plate.
Plywood decking. Plywood over metal B deck allows operation of pallet jacks and other wheeled equipment on the mezzanine. It's economical and provides a smooth surface for moving pallets. Resin-coated plywood decking lowers maintenance and increases the life of mezzanine floors.
Diamond plate decking. The most durable mezzanine flooring option, diamond plate decking over B decking is frequently used in gate areas where material is transferred by forklifts.
Bar grating decking. Used for mezzanine floors where ventilation, lighting and fire regulation are concerns, bar grating decking consists of welded and painted steel bars that can be sized to meet requirements.
Metal plank decking. Designed for outdoor, freezer and wet mezzanine floor applications, metal plank decking is made of galvanized metal perforated to allow water, light and air to pass through. Serrated surfaces are optional to provide traction.
