Canon’s 6500 line includes multifunctional centers, all similar as a base model, but with progressively larger lists of features. The Canon Copier ImageClass MF6550 has most of the same features as the other monochrome lasers in the line, but substitutes networking for a built in Super G3 fax modem, making it ideal for single computer setups that require faxing capabilities.
Without an Ethernet port, the USB 2.0 HI Speed standard interface is your link to a Windows based PC or Macintosh. OS compatibility is complete, not including Linux systems, but Windows® 98, Me, 2000, XP, and Mac® OS X 10.2.8 & up. As we’ve seen before with this line, Mac users will be restricted to printing and, in this case, PC faxing, as scanning software is not included for the Mac.
Printing and paper handling marks are high with the Canon Copier imageCLASS MF6550, boasting a fast print speed of 23 pages per minute and a huge 500 sheet paper tray. 500 sheet trays are rarer than the common 250 size, but are an absolute luxury worth having due to their ability to receive an entire ream of paper. Print resolution is adjustable from 600 x 600 dots per inch to 1200 x 600 dpi, and copy resolutions and speeds are the same.
There is also a large multipurpose tray implemented that can hold up to 100 sheets, depending on your type of media. Thicker objects, such as envelopes, will fit less. With a first copy time of less than 8 seconds, firing up and using the 50 sheet automatic document feeder is fast, and convenient. The ADF can also be useful when scanning multiple sheets, or faxing.
A huge bonus feature of this machine is the duplex printing. With duplexing, you can pull off a double sided print, copy, or scan automatically. This can help cut cost of paper drastically, and also time, when compared with manual double sided printing.
While copying and faxing are reduced to black and white thanks to the monochrome laser technology, Canon has included a color image sensor for 24 bit color scans, at resolutions of 600 x 600 dots per inch optical, and 9600 dpi enhanced. Dedicated controls help you create JPEG, PDF, TIFF, and BMP file types from hard sources, and send them directly to your computer.
The toner system on the Canon Copier imageCLASS MF6550 is of a single cartridge type, making ink swaps fast and easy and, with a maximum monthly duty cycle of 15,000 pages, the high yield toner will come in handy. Canon has also included 64 MBs of RAM to keep multiple projects running smoothly, and to store fax data safely.
When networking is not a priority, such as in a home office situation with a single computer, an all in one like the Canon Copier imageCLASS MF6550 is an option worth considering, though, with such beefed up features, most single setups will not take full advantage of the output capabilities of this hardware. However, if your requirements include moving a lot of paper from one unit, this could be it.
